Sufiyan
Khatri

A master craftsman from Ajrakhpur, Sufiyan Khatri, carries forward the centuries-old tradition of Ajrakh block printing.

Punarnawa is a women oriented organisation based in Orissa, Assam. Punarnawa in Sanskrit (an ancient language of India) means – that which is restored or renewed.

What they do

Sufiyan Khatri belongs to a long lineage of Ajrakh artisans and is internationally recognised for his mastery of this intricate block printing technique. Based in Ajrakhpur, Gujarat, his workshop brings together generations of knowledge, natural dyes, and hand-carved wooden blocks to create rich, detailed patterns rooted in Islamic geometry and regional symbolism.

Beyond preserving tradition, Sufiyan innovates within it – experimenting with new layouts, contemporary colours, and applications in fashion and interior design. His work is both a tribute to heritage and a bold step into its future.

Sufiyan is also an advocate for the artisan community, ensuring fair wages, transparent processes, and cultural pride through his practice.
