Weftus is ‘Weft-us’

While exploring the Indian textile and art scenes between 2015 and 2017, I (Moena, director of Weftus) met incredible hands and minds, people who create everyday products and artworks that stay with you, that you remember and cherish for a lifetime.
I wanted to stay connected with them and wondered how I could be involved in a way that nurtures a thriving, ongoing relationship, not just one based on the typical maker-and-consumer model, which often feels one-directional and hierarchical, but more like a maker-and-designer relationship: collaborative, dimensional, and horizontal.
That horizontal connection is the “weft”, the thread that runs across the loom when fabric is woven. And that weft makes us one. To be honest, I simply wanted to remain friends, work together, and create something beautiful.

Slow and steady. That’s the concept behind this project.
We believe people are naturally drawn to stories, to the process behind the product, to the subtle “oddness” that makes something feel more personal. Building relationships is no different; it takes time to get to know each other, communicate better, and even travel to meet face-to-face.

Since its beginning, Weftus has been travelling to India almost every year (except during the global pandemic), staying connected with these friends, creating new block-printed textiles and garments. They are all part of us, and we work together in the same way we communicate with friends. Most of our work is custom-made, because that allows Weftus to directly connect our artisan friends with our customers. We want to bring this human circle into your closet, your home, and your everyday life.

Weftus(ウェフタス)は「Weft-us(横糸の私たち)」という意味です。
